Do You Own A Business? How To Make Your Building More Accessible To Those With Disabilities

Posted on

If you own a business, you want to make sure that your building is accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities. Even if you're not required to be ADA compliant due to size, it's still important to do all that you can for your customers with mobility issues. Lack of accessibility can often prevent people with disabilities from entering certain buildings. Here are four steps you can take to make sure that your commercial building is accessible to all your customers.

Automatic Doors

When it comes to making your building accessible to those with disabilities, one of the first things you should do is install automatic doors. It can be next to impossible to open doors from a wheelchair, or when using other mobility devices. However, the installation of automatic doors will make it that much easier for those with mobility issues to enter your commercial building. Whether you choose fully-automatic doors that open as soon as someone approaches, or you choose doors that operate via a push-pad, you'll be making your building accessible to everyone.

Wheelchair Ramps

If you have a curb or stairs in front of your building, and you don't have wheelchair ramps, you're building isn't as accessible as it should be. Without a ramp, people in wheelchairs will not be able to access your building. Not only that, but individuals with other types of mobility issues won't be able to access your building either. For instance, it can be extremely difficult for someone with arthritis to climb stairs. The addition of a wheelchair ramp will benefit all your customers who suffer from mobility issues.

Wider Doorways

Take a look at the doorways inside your commercial building. If the doorways aren't wide enough for a wheelchair, your office isn't completely accessible. If your customers are required to enter into other rooms of your office, but the doorways aren't wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs, you should take care of that issues as soon as possible. Even if you're not required by law to make those changes, you'll be showing your customers that you truly care about their needs.

Bathroom Accessibility

If you have bathrooms that are available to your customers, you need to make sure that they're accessible to your customers with mobility issues. Installing an elevated toilet and grab bars will help make the bathroom more accessible to all your customers. It's also a good idea to install paper towel dispensers that are closer to the ground. It can be difficult for someone in a wheelchair to access paper towels when the dispenser is too high off the ground.
